Are you wondering if a career in the offshore wind energy sector is right for you? The article "Opportunities for Women in the Offshore Wind Energy Sector" presents the challenges and opportunities that a job in this field can bring. Read about the skills required and the career development prospects that the offshore wind energy sector offers for women.

Opportunities for Women in the Offshore Wind Energy Sector

The offshore wind energy sector offers women a range of technical and engineering positions. With the growing demand for renewable energy sources, companies in this sector need qualified specialists who can design, build, and maintain offshore wind farms [1]. Women have the opportunity to pursue careers in fields such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering. For instance, Beata Nepelska-Kula, the Managing Director at ILF Polska, is a successful woman in the engineering industry, leading a large consulting firm in the offshore wind energy sector [2]. As the industry grows, women will have even more opportunities to excel in technical and engineering roles.

Environmental protection and sustainability roles are also available in the offshore wind energy sector. As the industry focuses on reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable practices, companies need professionals who can ensure their projects are environmentally friendly. Women can pursue careers in fields such as environmental science, sustainability, and environmental management. In Poland, there is a growing demand for women in leadership positions in the offshore wind energy sector to promote sustainable practices and improve the industry’s environmental impact [3][4]. As sustainability becomes increasingly important in the industry, women can make a significant impact in these roles.

Leadership and management roles are crucial in the offshore wind energy sector. Women can pursue careers in areas such as project management, business development, and strategic planning. For example, the Director of the Development Department at PGE Baltica oversees activities related to business development and analysis within offshore wind energy [5]. Women can also participate in the development of the entire renewable energy sector, not just offshore wind farms [3][6]. The first Executive MBA program in Poland for offshore wind energy provides women with a unique opportunity to gain industry knowledge and modern competencies [5][7]. As the industry develops, women can contribute to the success of the sector in leadership and managerial positions.

The event ” Young Personnel for Offshore Wind Energy,” which took place on March 5-6, 2024, at Amber Expo in Gdańsk, gathered experts, educators, career advisors, students, and representatives from the offshore wind industry.

On March 5, 2024, the first part of the two-day event aimed at promoting activities and disseminating materials developed as part of the project took place. A dedicated booth became the center of knowledge and experience exchange about offshore wind energy in Poland for six hours.

During the event, a wide range of educational materials were presented. The goal was to promote the project and equip experts with tools for effective career counseling for youth interested in the offshore wind energy sector, as well as support youth seeking information about this sector. The materials were designed for a broad audience.

Everyone interested could also access a report aimed at vocational schools and technical colleges, highlighting the potential in the offshore wind energy sector. This document, based on thorough analyses and research, not only presents the current job market needs in the industry but also career development prospects for young people choosing to train in this field.

The second day of the event (March 6) began with the continuation of presentations and distribution of educational materials by Dr. Tomasz Solarski at the project booth. These materials garnered significant interest, confirming the growing demand for specialized knowledge about the offshore wind energy sector.

After a break, the event moved to the conference room, where Dr. Tomasz Solarski ceremoniously began the next segment with a presentation of the report for vocational schools and technical colleges. The presentation emphasized the crucial role of education and training in preparing young talents for work in the rapidly developing industry.

Following the presentation, Izabela Klonowska-Hincka introduced participants to the “Guide to the Offshore Wind Energy Sector for Career Advisors.” This presentation, designed for career advisors, teachers, and business representatives, was a comprehensive overview of the practical aspects of working in the offshore sector. Using her extensive experience, Izabela Klonowska-Hincka highlighted the necessity of continuously updating knowledge to understand the ever-changing industry.

Simultaneously, a panel discussion titled “The Future is Now. How Social Education Can Shape Leaders in the Offshore Sector” was led by Dr. hab. Sylwia Mrozowska, prof. UG, who coordinates Group 5 “Social Education,” established to implement the Sector Agreement at the Ministry of Climate and Environment. Her expertise and commitment to the development of sustainable energy provided a solid foundation for the discussion, which aimed to explore how social education influences the formation of future leaders in the offshore industry. The panel focused on key aspects of social education, such as building awareness of the importance of renewable energy sources, developing essential skills for working in the offshore wind energy sector, and fostering pro-environmental attitudes. The project’s actions were also highlighted for their promotional and educational value.

The discussions also covered educational initiatives and programs that can support the development of the offshore wind energy sector, as well as ways in which educational institutions, NGOs, and businesses can collaborate to promote knowledge and skills crucial for the future of the offshore wind energy industry.

Another panel titled “Career Counseling and Career Paths in Offshore Wind Energy and the Maritime Economy. Preparing the Young Generation for Challenges in These Sectors,” moderated by Izabela Klonowska-Hincka, brought together prominent experts from various fields, enabling a rich exchange of experiences and perspectives. The panel became a platform for intensive exchange of ideas on how to best prepare the young generation for future careers in the offshore wind energy and maritime economy sectors. The panelists expressed their appreciation for the high quality of the ” Young Personnel for Offshore Wind Energy ” project and their willingness to incorporate the materials developed from the project into their daily work.

The conclusions from the discussions emphasized the need for an integrated approach combining education, career counseling, industry collaboration, and practical experience to equip young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the dynamic offshore wind energy sector.

The event ” Young Personnel for Offshore Wind Energy ” attracted significant interest from participants, reflecting the growing public awareness of the importance of renewable energy sources and the need to invest in education and the development of young talents in this field. The initiative by TEWP, PWK OHP, and PTMEW, with the involvement of experts, contributes to building a solid foundation for the future development of offshore wind energy in Poland.
